Campaign Promises-Why Do We Believe Them?

Over my lifetime I have heard many campaign promises. Unfortunately that’s all most of them were, just promises and were broken as soon as the candidate was elected into office. Politicians have a bad habit of promising anything to get elected and never follow through with any action. As I have written in my book, “Politicians Checklist To Win Elections” politicians follow a continuous cycle of making promises, do little or no action and then run for re-election campaigns. So with this in mind why should we believe in the promises made during the 2024 election cycle?

We are dealing with self serving politicians. They are not interested in what is best for the country, they are only interested for what’s best for themselves. That’s why they spend enormous amounts of money to get elected to an office that pay less than what they spent on their election or re-election. As many of us have seen in the past our politicians are great at speaking but rarely follow through with action.

Let’s look at the 2024 Presidential Election. Many promises were made by President Trump now we have to see if those promises are kept. Many say President Trump is not a politician, and that is true, but the problem is he will be dealing with politicians on a daily basis. That includes the ones that surround him and those in the Senate and House of Representatives.

The Executive Branch of the President is just a figurehead for the country. The Legislative Branch, House of Representative and Senate, make and pass the laws of this country. The President can make recommendations and ultimately signs the laws that are passed by the Legislative Branch into law. The Judicial Branch’s job is to make sure the laws that are passed and signed into law are Constitutional. Unfortunately today with the activist judges as we have seen over the last few years think that they make policy by controlling the Constitutionality of our laws. In their eyes judges make policy as per what Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor said once in a speech a few years ago. This is not following our Constitution as written but it has become an unwritten policy of our current judicial system. The one place where the President does have control is in foreign policy. It is still under the supervision of the Legislative Branch when it comes to Tariffs and some military operations.

Many promises were made by the Republican candidate for President in 2024 such as:
No tax on tips
No tax on Social Security
Tax reform
Tariffs
Mass deportations
Bringing jobs back to the USA
Eliminating government agencies
Mass firings of government employees
FDA overhaul
and many others.

Some of the above can be done with Executive Orders. Most other campaign promises will have to go through and be approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate. The President does have Veto power over the laws that are passed by the Legislative Branch so he can in a way shape the law into something that he promised during his campaign. If the laws passed are controversial lawsuits will be filed and it will be up to the courts to sort out if the new laws and policies are Constitutional. That’s where the problem lies with the activist judges that are in place all over our judicial system. It’s a crap shoot if these campaign promises, new laws and policies ever see the light of day.

One of the most popular promise made during the campaign was to make the government more efficient. A new department was named, “Department of Government Efficiency” or DOGE. So it looks like the new administration wants a new bureaucracy to cut government bureaucracy. A new Cabinet Department would have to be set up by the Legislative Branch so we will see if money will be issued for a new bureaucracy. With all the hype about Elon Musk heading this “Department” people need to settle down and ask if it is a conflict of interest. Elon Musk operates several companies and it would be a good guess that some of his companies have government contracts. So people need to hold on to reality when it comes to some of the hype. The new “Department of Government Efficiency” might only be an advisory board which means it only can advise but has no power to act.

Since this is also President Trump’s last term in office could he be considered a lame duck? Does he have enough political power to keep his campaign promises and enact his agenda? He probably has about a year and a half to get some of his policies done. After that the politicians will start running for re-election for 2026 and they won’t be willing to pass anything that could hurt their chances of re-election. After the 2026 election he will definitely be a lame duck President because the politicians will be looking to 2028.

I have heard many campaign promises before, talk is cheap and easy, action is hard and few. Until action occurs it is all hype and campaign promises. In my life most of the time that’s where it ends because there is rarely action. I believe in this phrase, “No expectations means no disappointments.” We are currently seeing, as in the past political appointments are being handed out like party favors. Politicians know where to stand, what to say and say what they want people to hear. They do this so they can be seen, heard and picked. With the current picks for the new administration I do not believe any of it will help the average citizen of the USA. As usual campaign promises will be kept for the rich, famous and well connected but rarely for the average people of the country. Unkept promises for the hardworking people of the United States is a fact and will never change.
